Dando, 37, was shot in the head at point-blank range on the doorstep of her west London home in April 1999. The murder shocked the nation.
Police have not publicly named the man, who is the first suspect to be arrested on suspicion of murder in an investigation which has lasted more than a year and taken detectives around the world.
But British media identified him as Barry Bulsara, a devoted fan of the rock band Queen who claimed to be a cousin of Freddie Mercury and shared the late singer's real last name.
